Privacy Policy
Nettie is a calorie tracker. To work, it needs to know what you eat and, if you allow it, how active you are. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, who else sees it, and how to delete it.
- There is no account and no email sign-up. Your app gets a random ID when you install it.
- What you log (text and meal photos) is sent to an AI model to estimate nutrition. We name that provider below, and we ask you before the first time.
- Health data (active calories and weight) is used only to show your numbers. It is never used for advertising, never sold and never shared with data brokers.
- We don't run ads or advertising trackers.
- You can delete everything at any time.
Who we are
Nettie is provided by LOVE AND COFFEE LIMITED ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 09859856), registered address 13 Grangemouth Road, Coventry, United Kingdom, CV6 3EZ. We are the controller of your personal data under the UK GDPR and, for users in the EU/EEA, the EU GDPR. Contact: support@nettie.app.
What we collect and why
| Data | What it's for | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| App ID: a random identifier created on your device at install | Keeps your food log, goals and subscription together without an account | Contract |
| Food you log: the text you type, meal photos, scanned barcodes, and the resulting entries (calories and macros) | Estimating nutrition and keeping your diary | Contract |
| Body and goal details: height, weight, age, sex, activity level, your goal (lose, maintain or gain), goal weight and pace | Calculating your calorie and macro targets | Your explicit consent, given when you enter them (they can count as health data) |
| Health data, only if you connect Apple Health or Health Connect: daily active calories burned, and weight measurements | Showing calories eaten vs burned, and keeping your weight up to date | Your explicit consent, given in the system permission prompt |
| Approximate location: city, region and country from your device's location (if you allow it), otherwise estimated from your IP address | Matching regional product recipes and restaurant menus so estimates are more accurate | Legitimate interest (accuracy); device location only with your permission |
| Subscription status: which plan you have and when it renews or expires | Unlocking Nettie Pro | Contract |
| Onboarding answers, such as how you heard about Nettie (optional) | Understanding which channels work | Legitimate interest |
| AI request records: the prompt sent to the AI model (photos aren't included), its response, cost and timing | Fixing wrong estimates, preventing abuse, and controlling costs | Legitimate interest |
| Technical logs: IP address, request times and errors in server logs | Keeping the service running and secure | Legitimate interest |
We don't collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts or advertising ID, and we don't use cookies in the app.
This website
nettie.app uses Plausible, a self-hosted analytics tool that sets no cookies and doesn't track you across sites. Where we use Google Analytics, which sets cookies, visitors in the EU, EEA and UK are asked first: it only loads after you accept the cookie banner, and if you reject it, it isn't loaded. Clear this site's data in your browser to see the banner again.
AI analysis of your food
When you log food by text or photo, Nettie sends that text or photo, along with your approximate region, to OpenRouter (OpenRouter, Inc., USA). OpenRouter routes it to an AI model, currently Google Gemini (Google LLC). The model returns the foods it recognises and their nutrition. For branded or restaurant items, the model may run a web search using the food's name. Your app ID, health data and body details are not sent.
We ask for your permission before your first AI-analysed log, and you can withdraw it at any time by deleting your data in the app's settings. Without it, photo and text logging don't work; barcode scans do. If we change the AI provider, we'll update this page and ask again.
Who else processes your data
| Who | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter (USA) and Google (Gemini) | Food text and photos, approximate region | Nutrition estimates (see above) |
| DigitalOcean | All data stored by our server | Hosting our server and database |
| ip-api.com | Your IP address, only when device location isn't available | Estimating your region |
| Open Food Facts (France) | The barcode number only | Looking up packaged-food nutrition |
| RevenueCat (USA) | Your app ID and purchase receipts | Managing subscriptions |
| Apple / Google | Purchase details (they process the payment, not us) | App Store and Google Play billing |
If you choose to connect an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT or Claude, to log food for you, that assistant's provider sees what you tell it under its own privacy policy, and we store the link so it can add entries to your diary. You can disconnect it in the app's settings.
We never sell your data or share it for advertising. Health data from Apple Health or Health Connect isn't used for advertising, marketing or data mining, isn't disclosed to third parties except as needed to provide the features above, and isn't stored in iCloud.
International transfers
Some of the processors above are in the USA. Where data leaves the UK or EU/EEA, we rely on appropriate safeguards: the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum, the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or an adequacy decision such as the UK-US data bridge and EU-US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider is certified.
How long we keep it
We keep your diary, body details, health data and AI request records for as long as you use Nettie. When you delete your data, all of it is erased from our database and photo storage within 30 days. Copies in backups disappear as backups are overwritten. Server logs are kept only as long as needed to run and secure the service. If you stop using the app without deleting your data, we erase it after 24 months of inactivity.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export or delete your data, object to processing based on legitimate interest, and withdraw consent at any time (this doesn't affect processing that already happened). To delete everything, see Delete your data. For anything else, email support@nettie.app. We'll reply within one month. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or, in the EU/EEA, to your local data protection authority.
Children
Nettie isn't meant for anyone under 16, and we don't knowingly collect data from children. If you think a child has used Nettie, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
All traffic between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Meal photos are stored under random, unguessable names. Access to the database is restricted to the people who run Nettie.
Not medical advice
Nettie's numbers are estimates to help you track your intake. They aren't medical advice. Talk to a health professional before making big changes to your diet.
Changes
If we make a material change, such as a new AI provider or a new kind of data, we'll update the date above and tell you in the app before it takes effect.
